Spring Festival 2021 | What did Haida teachers do?

2021-03-01 15:15

The Chinese Spring Festival is like Western's Christmas. People are immersed in the festive atmosphere. What is the experience of Haida foreign teachers in Chinese new year? Let's have a look.

"A lot of events were put on specially to support natives, and non natives who remained in Hangzhou for Chinese New Year. This was a 'Vegetarian/Vegan' event in conjunction with Z-rou.  Z-rou are a plant based 'meat' company. We were split into 2 groups, and named ourselves.  ‘Cha Cha Cha’ made Z-ou meat, and vegetable dumplings.  My group ‘DJ Dumplings’ made tofu, and vegetable ones.  Because I am a fussy eater, I made my own mix."  —— From English Teacher Fiona

"Oh. Well it was a lovely experience. We had a teacher who has spent more than 15 years doing calligraphy. We were all given our own brushes and they talked us through each character for the couplet. They taught us how the characters developed and the history behind them. It was difficult at first because you hold the brush so differently to how you would hold a pen, it's closer to how you'd hold a violin bow. Once you're comfortable with that though there is actually a lot of scope for creativity. It was a lot of fun and I'd happily do it again. " —— From English Teacher Siobhan

"It was a great experience celebrating Chinese New Year holidays with my family. I have seen some new Chinese culture. How they celebrate the new year. This is a family gathering time. Besides, I saw fireworks around in my community. It was great like light festival in our country. Enjoyed it! Happy new year of the ox!" —— From Science Teacher Shanti

Saying from others......

'Chinese Spring Festival is very similar to Western Christmas. At Christmas, people hold Christmas parties to report safety to their relatives and friends, while Chinese people set off firecrackers and visit relatives during the Spring Festival.'

'Chinese Spring Festival is always accompanied by strong family affection. Of course, there are lively firecrackers and gorgeous fireworks. My Chinese friends told me that this is a sign of good harvest and good luck in the coming year.'

'Children and young people get excited when they receive a red envelope with lucky money. It reminds me of how I felt when I got presents at Christmas.'

'Everyone gathered around the table, making dumplings and chatting. The children who worked outside all came home and told their families about their work in the past year. I deeply feel the importance that Chinese people attach to family affection and reunion.'

The spring festival begins on the first day of the first lunar month and ends on the 15th (Lantern Festival). The Lantern Festival, which is also a very important reunion day, is coming soon. Haida wish you all a happy reunion.
