2022-05-27 16:02

The epidemic in Shenzhen, China has been brought back under control, schools are back on the right track, and Haida’s new foreign teachers have finally been placed into schools. This time, Haida in Shenzhen branch interviewed our new foreign teacher, George, to hear his first impressions of living in China with Haida.

Q: How well do you feel Haida have been with regard to getting you accommodated and finding a place at a school?

A: Haida have done a good job finding me a school despite them all being closed for the first part of the semester. However, I was able to start online.

Q: What have been your challenges since arriving in China and how have Haida’s staff helped with your arrival?

A: I have struggled with deliveries a lot but my handler has always been happy to help translate and communicate.

Q: What are your first impressions of China?

A: My first impression is that it is a lot more similar to the UK than I thought it would be.

Q: What have you done since arriving?

A: I have seen a lot of Shenzhen. I have been on hikes and to the beach for New Year’s Eve.

Q: What are your thoughts and opinions about your school?

A: My school is very welcoming and they are bending over backwards to help me, which is really nice.

Q: What’s your teaching philosophy with such large classes?

A: My philosophy is that very child learns at least one thing every lesson, regardless of ability.

Q: What do you think your teaching challenges will be?

A: A challenge could be making sure the children are not bored whilst also learning.

Q: How would you describe the differences between your own schooling and the schooling here?

A: The main difference is the interactions. I had a lot of student-student conversations in England but here it’s very teacher-student.

Q: Any other thoughts and opinions you’d like to share?

A: It’s been a good start and I look forward to the rest of the year.

Haida is looking forward to working with more and more foreign teachers.
