Last weekend, Haida organized a pottery making activity. Teachers in Hangzhou went to a crafts studio to learn how to make pottery with professional tools.

Making pottery is a fun way to make ornamental ceramics or practical objects for your home. The art of pottery is oftentimes described as therapeutic and relaxing

While spinning clay, your mind and body are in natural synergy, wrapped around your creative ambitions and goals.

Clay is fine-grained earth that can be shaped when wet. It contains sand, minerals, tiny rocks and other natural soil components in different concentrations. Clays that have high concentrations of iron oxide tend to have a rusty, red or orange appearance while those with no iron at all look gray or even white, which is the case with porcelain clay.

Working on the wheel is calming and stress relivingThe difficulty in this technique comes from Centering your clay and bringing up the walls without having your clay collapse. After the clay is bone dry, it will be sent into a kiln for a bisque firing.

Concentrated……Everyone was doing a great job!

Finished. Let’s see what they have made!

Clay is never boring, there is always more to explore, more to try out and more to create. All the teachers enjoyed the process of making pottery and felt proud of the work they have made with their own hands.
