Haida Intercultural Class

2020-07-08 10:10

Recently, the education bureau of Bao’an invited a Haida teacher, Nidia, to conduct a lesson with a difference. The idea was for her to present a culture class of her home country of Mexico and use another teacher’s video presenting their country in the same lesson.

Nidia has been with Haida for three years and is originally from Toluca, Mexico, while Eugene has been with Haida for almost two years and is originally from Novopolotsk, Belarus.

Nidia and Eugene collaborated, while residing in different countries to work out the lesson and for Nidia to conduct the lesson. How did it go?

INTERVIEW  ▏ 访 谈

01

What do you like most about teaching?

N: The students! They encourage you to be a better teacher, they challenge me, they make me smile, and they are my teachers, too. Every day is a different journey for them and I love to be part of it and make a small, positive impact with tons of love.

02

Why do you think the bureau chose you from all the other teachers?

N: I think they asked me because I love to talk about cultures and, of course, because I love my country.

03

How were you feeling before going into the class?

N: I was really nervous. There were a lot of people there along with the students. Besides, a teacher, when I was at university, told me once, if you’re about to perform and you don’t feel a little nervous that day, you should change career because it doesn’t excite you anymore and it’s not your passion.

04

Did the lesson go as expected?

N: Yes, but I was so excited that I forgot it was an open class. It was a really fun class. It wasn’t perfect, but together we worked out the problems and they had fun.

05

Speaking of problems, what things would you change if you did it again?

N: I think I should have modelled the speaking activity better, and probably some more ICQ’s (Instruction Concept Questions).

06

Considering the jet lag, how does the class work in the end?

N: Well, it was really challenging at first because we’re in two different countries and the time difference between us, but Eugene he was always in the best attitude for work.

E: Everything went very smoothly. She asked me some questions. So, for me, it was quite easy, she did almost everything.

07

Did you have any problem with the project?

E: Not at all. I just edited the video, made it shorter, answered some questions and enjoyed working with her.

08

So, overall, what was the best thing about the experience?

N: Seeing the students excited about new cultures and after all this hard time, on their first day of school, they welcomed me with the most wonderful energy and love!

09

And would you consider doing the project again?

E: I would do it again. I’m happy to be busy, especially with a collaborative project. I’d like to thank Haida for the opportunity to work on the project.
